Here are the summaries of the chapters in the NCERT Class 12 Chemistry book which will give you a glimpse of what you will be facing this year:

Chapter 1: The Solid State

You start your adventure in the world of chemistry with the chapter ‘The Solid State’. The chapter describes the characteristics of the solid state, the difference between amorphous and crystalline solids, imperfections in solids, unit cells, etc.

Chapter 2: Solutions

This is a vital chapter in the NCERT Class 12 Chemistry book. As the chapter name suggests, Chapter 2 focuses on the different types of solutions, the concentration of solutions, solubility of solids and gases in a liquid, Raoult’s Law, abnormal molar masses and other essential topics.

Chapter 3: Electrochemistry

Chapter 3 in the NCERT Class 12 Chemistry book will give students an insight into an electrochemical cell, the difference between electrolytic and galvanic cell, the standard potential of the cell, Gibbs energy of cell reaction and its equilibrium constant, and other topics related to electrochemistry.

Chapter 4: Chemical Kinetics

‘Chemical Kinetics’ is an important chapter for students who want to enter the engineering or medical field. It focuses on the rate of chemical reaction, the factors that influence the rate of chemical reaction, the integrated rate equation, Pseudo First Order Reaction, and other such topics related to the rate of chemical reaction.

Chapter 5: Surface Chemistry

Chapter 5 in the NCERT Class 12 Chemistry book deals with several important topics like the classification of emulsions, adsorption and its classification, interfacial phenomenon, the mechanism of adsorption, factors controlling the adsorption from gases and solutions on solids, properties and purification of colloids, gel formation, etc.

Chapter 6: General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Elements

This is an important chapter in the NCERT Class 12 Chemistry book. In the previous classes, you have come across metals and the basic concept of metallurgy. In this chapter, you will get an elaborate insight into the occurrence of metals, concentration of ores and the cleaning process, extraction of crude metal from ores, thermodynamic and electrochemical principles of metallurgy, the refining process, and the uses of zinc, aluminium, copper and other metals.

Chapter 7: p-Block Elements

This is a lengthy chapter and covers several different topics. The chapter talks about the Group 15 Elements, oxides of Nitrogen, the allotropic forms of phosphorus, the oxoacids of phosphorus, the Group 16 elements, the simple oxides, the allotropic forms of sulphur, the oxoacids of sulphur, chlorine, etc.

Chapter 8: The d and f Block Elements

While not as long as Chapter 7, Chapter 8 is a critical chapter. It describes the general and physical properties of transition elements (d block), the formation of coloured ions and complex compounds, variation in atomic and ionic sizes of transition metals, ionization enthalpies, oxidation states, and magnetic properties. It also talks about the element of d and f block, their electronic configuration, their chemical reactivity of the inner transition metals and their oxidation states.

Chapter 9: Coordination Compounds

‘Coordination Compounds’ is a complex chapter which introduces students to the definition of Coordination Compounds, the nomenclature of coordination compounds, isomerism in coordination compounds, Werner’s theory of coordination compounds, and many such important topics.

Chapter 10: Haloalkanes and Haloarenes

Chapter 10 in the NCERT Class 12 Chemistry book deals with Haloalkanes and Haloarenes based on the IUPAC system of nomenclature, their applications of organo-metallic compounds, the different reactions involved in the preparation of Haloalkanes and Haloarenes, how stereochemistry can be used to understand the reaction mechanism and the environmental effects of polyhalogen compounds.

Chapter 11: Alcohols, Phenols and Ether

In this chapter, students will learn about Alcohols, Phenols and Ether, how to write their names as per the IUPAC system of nomenclature, the physical properties to alcohols, ethers and phenols, the reactions involved in the process of making alcohol from alcohols, phenols and ethers, and the process of preparing of phenols and ethers from different compounds.

Chapter 12: Aldehydes, Ketones and Carboxylic Acids

This is another vital chapter in the NCERT Class 12 Chemistry book. It teaches students how to write the names of ketones, aldehydes and carboxylic acids as per the IUPAC names, their structure and physical properties as well as the chemical reactions that they undergo.

Chapter 13: Amines

Chapter 13 deals with organic compounds: Amines. In this chapter, students will learn about the structure of amines, preparation of amines, the physical properties and chemical reactions of amines, the method of preparation of diazonium salts, the importance of diazonium salts of aromatic compounds, etc.

Chapter 14: Biomolecules

This chapter links chemistry with biology. It dives into the world of biomolecules like proteins, vitamins, carbohydrates and nucleic acid and helps students to classify them based on their structure. Important differences between DNA and RNA, and the role of biomolecules in the bio-system is also discussed in this chapter.

Chapter 15: Polymers

Chapter 15 deals with polymers. It covers the important topics like monomer, polymer and Polymerisation, classification of Polymers based on their source, classification of polymers based on their structure, cross-linked or network polymers, the polymers of commercial use, and other valuable information regarding polymers.
